DJI unveils the 7ᵉ generation of its popular smartphone stabilizer, and this year, surprise: there’s not one, but two models. In addition to the DJI Osmo Mobile 7, the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P makes its appearance, promising more advanced features. So, what’s new in this generation? In terms of design, both models retain an ergonomic handle and folding arm, with a new integration of the tripod directly into the handle. Only the 7P features a 215 mm extension rod, ideal for a wider range of shooting angles.

They offer four stabilization modes and ActiveTrack 7.0 tracking, which further enhances subject recognition and tracking even in motion. A major new feature of the 7P’s multifunctional module is the ability to use subject tracking with any application, from the smartphone’s camera to third-party apps such as Instagram and TikTok. DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P : Design

Two versions, subtle differences

If you’re familiar with the Osmo Mobile range, you won’t be disoriented by this 7ᵉ generation. DJI takes up the familiar lines of its stabilizers, with an ergonomic handle offering a good grip, a folding arm that automatically powers up the device when deployed, and a magnetic mount compatible with most smartphones, allowing you to attach your device in a second.

The first notable difference between the Osmo Mobile 7 and the 7P concerns color: the 7 is a light gray, while the 7P is a more sober dark gray. In terms of dimensions, the two models are very similar, with a difference of around 1 cm in height and thickness, the 7P being slightly larger (190 mm folded vs. 179 mm for the 7, and 288 mm unfolded vs. 278 mm). Despite this, both remain compact and easy to carry, whether in a bag or a large coat pocket.

An integrated tripod and an extendable rod exclusive to the 7P

One of the most visible changes concerns the tripod. Until now, DJI supplied a small bracket to be screwed to the underside of the camera. This time, it’s integrated directly into the handle. The result is greater practicality, both for transport and installation. On the other hand, the feet are shorter and offer slightly less stability than the previous model.

As with the Osmo Mobile 6, the 7P incorporates a 215 mm extension rod concealed in the handle. This can be used to widen shooting angles, particularly for low-angle shots or selfies. The standard Osmo Mobile 7 has no such rod.

Controls as intuitive as ever

The 7P ‘s interface is based on that of the Osmo Mobile 6, with a small status screen displaying shooting mode, battery and recording time. There are the classic controls:

• Joystick: manual gondola control
• Button M: on/off and mode change
• Record button: trigger photos and videos
• Toggle button: changes camera (front/back), orientation (portrait/landscape) or mode (photo/video)
• Rear trigger: activates tracking, refocuses the stabilizer or changes its orientation according to the number of presses.
• Side-mounted thumbwheel (exclusive to 7P): zooms in and out, adjusts focus and controls the light intensity of the multifunction module

We find the same configuration on theOsmo Mobile 7, with the exception of the side wheel, replaced by a simple cursor that only allows zooming by moving up and down.

The multifunctional module: the big news

The real innovation of this generation is the appearance of a multifunctional module. Supplied as standard with the Osmo Mobile 7P and as an option for the Osmo Mobile 7, it attaches directly to the magnetic base and can be oriented forwards or backwards. This module combines three unique functions:

1. An optical sensor that enhances tracking and, above all, enables ActiveTrack to be used with any application (smartphone’s native camera, Instagram, TikTok, etc.).
2. An auxiliary light with adjustable intensity and temperature via the side knob.
3. A wireless receiver for connecting a DJI Mic Mini, with a maximum range of 200 meters without interference.

The icing on the cake is that this module can also recharge your smartphone by drawing on the stabilizer’s battery, a function that also remains accessible via the handle’s USB-C port.

Four stabilization modes

Like the Osmo Mobile 6, the DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P offer four stabilization modes, adapted to different types of shooting:

• PTF (Pan Tilt Follow): locks rotations and follows only tilt and pan movements. Ideal for filming subjects in plunging or low-angle positions.
• PF (Pan Follow): follows only panoramic movements and locks the other axes. Perfect for horizontal shots and circular shots around a subject.
• FPV: follows movements on all three axes, offering total freedom to capture dynamic, immersive scenes.
• SpinShot: rotates the camera with the joystick, ideal for forward/backward tracking effects and stylish low-angle shots.

Subject tracking is one of the flagship features of smartphone stabilizers, and ActiveTrack 7.0 goes one step further. After locking on to a target (person, animal, vehicle, building), the cradle automatically tracks its movements, regardless of your own.

This new version features improved obstacle management: if the subject passes behind a background element or another person, ActiveTrack automatically finds him/her as soon as he/she reappears. It’s also possible to track several subjects simultaneously, and to change target simply by touching the thumbnail on the screen.

Another plus: autonomous tracking with the integrated tripod. Simply place the Osmo Mobile 7 or 7P on a flat surface, and the pod follows your movements without manual intervention. Ideal for vloggers and solo content creators.

Finally, this version introduces gesture recognition, allowing you to control the stabilizer without touching your smartphone:

• Open palm: starts or stops tracking.
• V” sign with fingers: starts or stops video recording.
• Two “L”-shaped hands: automatically adjusts framing.

DJI Mimo: an application with advanced features

While the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P are now compatible with all your smartphone’s video applications, the DJI Mimo app offers exclusive modes to enrich your shots:

• Panorama: three options available(3×3, 240° and CloneMe). CloneMe mode lets you capture the same subject in different places several times in a single photo.
• Timelapse, Hyperlapse and Motionlapse: for fluid, dynamic time-lapse videos.
• DynamicZoom: simulates a Vertigo/Dolly Zoom effect, famous in cinema for its dramatic, immersive effect.

Finally, the ShotGuides tool automatically detects the scene you’re shooting and suggests a sequence of suitable shots, withbuilt-in tutorials to help you shoot like a pro.

Autonomy: variable endurance depending on use

DJI claims a maximum autonomy of 10 hours for the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P, but this value corresponds to optimized use, without power-hungry accessories. In reality, use of the multifunctional module considerably reduces autonomy, especially if you activate the lamp at maximum power continuously. In this case, you should expect an autonomy of 3 to 4 hours.

As for recharging, it takes around 2h30 for a full charge, via the USB-C port on the handle. A reasonable amount of time, allowing you to quickly recover energy between two shooting sessions.

The ability to use ActiveTrack 7.0 for even more precise tracking, combined with excellent ergonomics, stabilization as powerful as ever, and a well-thought-out multi-function module, makes the 7P a particularly attractive option for content creators.

The only real limitation is the absence of 360° rotation on the panoramic axis, a feature offered by competitors such as theInsta360 Flow 2 Pro. But apart from this detail, DJI offers a solid, well-thought-out solution.

If you’re looking for an efficient, versatile stabilizer for filming with a smartphone, theOsmo Mobile 7P is an excellent choice, especially if you want to use tracking with any video application. And for those who simply want high-performance stabilization without the advanced features of the multifunction module, theOsmo Mobile 7 remains a more affordable alternative.
