With the GO Ultra, Insta360 retains the spirit of the range: a tiny, modular camera, consisting of a self-contained magnetic unit and its Action Pod. The small, square housing, which attaches easily to any metal surface, opens the door to creative shooting without the need for a tripod or additional accessory. More massive than the GO 3S, it remains one of the lightest models on the market, weighing just 52.9 g.

Slipped into the Action Pod, the GO Ultra transforms itself into a true “classic” action camera, with a 2.5″ flip-down touch screen (larger and easier to read than that of the GO 3S). The system is based on familiar ergonomics: three distinct buttons, a red shutter release, a power button, and a Q button for quick mode changes. On the side, a raised button allows you to detach the autonomous camera from its magnetic mount in an instant.

In terms of robustness, the camera alone remains the more resistant of the two modules. IPX8-certified, it can withstand up to 10 meters underwater and cold temperatures down to -20°C, making it ideal for snow sports. The Action Pod is merely splashproof, but protects the screen and facilitates framing. A pleasant surprise: the lens now features a screw-on anti-fog coating, a real plus for preventing scratches and condensation when shooting underwater or in extreme temperatures.

Finally, Insta360 corrects a shortcoming of its predecessors: storage is no longer limited to internal memory. The GO Ultra now accepts microSD cards up to 2TB, so you can film without constraint. And, as is often the case with Insta360, you can choose between two sober, elegant finishes: midnight black or arctic white.

💡 The redesigned magnetic pendant
Supplied in the standard pack, this magnetic necklace, familiar to GO users, enables the stand-alone camera to be fixed under a T-shirt, right at chest level, for hands-free POV filming. What’s new on this version is a rotating part that can be tilted in different directions (straight, slightly upwards or downwards), making it easy to adjust the angle without moving the camera.

Endurance revised upwards 🔋

As a reminder, the Action Pod recharges via USB-C just like a conventional battery. But its real role is to act as a docking station: it lets you recharge the little autonomous camera at any time, simply and conveniently, even on the move.

The Insta360 GO Ultra features a 500 mAh battery in the stand-alone camera and 1450 mAh in the Action Pod, compared with 310 mAh and 1270 mAh on the GO 3S. In terms of autonomy, progress is clear: the camera alone goes from 38 to 70 minutes, and the camera + Pod combination climbs from 140 to 200 minutes, nearly an hour more than the previous generation.

In practice, the values observed in published tests are slightly lower, but remain comfortable: expect around 40 to 50 minutes for the camera alone and a little over two hours with the Pod, when recording continuously at 1080p / 30 fps. Realistic results, but already more than enough to cover most shooting sessions.

Another highlight is the improved fast recharge: the camera goes from 0 to 80% in just 12 minutes(compared with 23 min on the GO 3S), while the Pod reaches 80% in 18 minutes (compared with 47 min previously). A real time-saver, so you can get back to filming without waiting.

It heats up, but it holds 🌡️

The mini format inevitably heats up. The camera quickly becomes hot to the touch when clips are chained together, but this does not interrupt recording.

According to published tests, when placed on a table at room temperature, the camera stops only when the battery is depleted, not due to overheating. To put it plainly: the heat can be felt, but it doesn’t really limit everyday use.

More fashions than ever

In terms of photography, the GO Ultra introduces two new features compared to the GO 3S: Photo Live, for capturing a moving scene, and Rafale, ideal for freezing fast-moving action.

On the video side, the list is also growing, with interesting additions such as Programmed Recording, handy for starting a shoot automatically, and the Titan Kids mode, designed for playful shooting.

But what really stands out is the arrival of PureVideo, inherited from the Ace Pro 2: a flagship mode that greatly enhances image quality in low light. A real plus that makes the GO Ultra more versatile than ever – and which we’ll discuss in greater detail in the section dedicated to image quality.

Control without hands

The GO Ultra can be controlled remotely by voice commands and, above all, by hand gestures, which can be used to trigger a photo or video without touching the camera. A practical solution when the camera is fixed to a stand or placed remotely, to maintain control even when on the move.

Apps as creative allies

As always with Insta360, the GO Ultra is supported by thefree Insta360 mobile app (iOS/Android) and Insta360 Studio software (Mac/Windows). These tools enable you to control the camera remotely, preview your shots and, above all, quickly edit your footage.

Integrated editing functions are easy to learn and cover the essentials (key points, transitions, music). Insta360 stays one step ahead with its AI options, capable of automatically generating small edits ready for publication in a matter of minutes.

A more controlled sound

With its built-in microphone, the GO Ultra offers four audio modes: stereo, voice enhancement and two levels of wind noise reduction. Based on user feedback and available tests, voices remain clear and well isolated, even in a lively environment. Wind remains its weakest point, but the dedicated settings help to attenuate it effectively.

For the more demanding, the camera is compatible with external microphones such as the Insta360 Mic Air, but also with third-party Bluetooth models (DJI Mic Mini, AirPods Pro 2…), for a more professional rendering.

Sensors and resolutions

The Insta360 GO Ultra features a 1/1.28-inch sensor, significantly larger than that of the GO 3S (more than twice the surface area). Combined with a new 5nm AI chip, it promises better detail management, especially in low light.

The camera also offers an impressive range of photo definitions: 9, 12, 37 or 50 MP depending on the chosen format (16:9 or 4:3). On the video front, the GO 3S has taken a real step forward: 4K is now available at 60 frames per second (up from 30), and there’s now a 1080p slow-motion mode at up to 240 fps. Maximum bitrate climbs to 180 Mb/s, guaranteeing rich detail.

Image quality

In daylight, the GO Ultra delivers a vivid, detailed image, with a good balance between highlights and shadows. Eight colorimetric profiles (Standard, Glow, Vivid, Urban, etc.) enable a wide range of renderings, from natural to more stylized. Luminosity transitions are well managed: for example, the transition from a shaded area to a brightly lit environment is seamless, and reflections are contained.

At night, the major new feature is PureVideo mode, carried over from higher-end models such as the Ace Pro 2. Limited to 4K 30 fps and automatic settings, it clearly improves exposure and reduces digital noise. Images are cleaner than those of the GO 3S, even if they still lag behind those of the Ace Pro 2. There is sometimes a slight loss of sharpness due to fairly advanced AI denoising, but overall it’s a welcome advance.

Underwater, the curved lens of the self-contained camera produces a slightly blurred image, but Insta360 offers a dedicated Aqualens lens that corrects the problem and provides far superior sharpness for aquatic shots.

A small drawback for demanding videographers: the GO Ultra does not offer a LOG-type flat profile, which limits the possibilities for advanced post-production color grading.
