DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, full review: everything that’s new!

Like certain models in its Mini and Mavic drone ranges, the fifth generation of DJI’s action cameras is stamped with the “Pro” label. So, what’s new in the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro? What is it really worth? Is it the ideal action camera for you? Should you consider replacing your Osmo Action 4 with this new version? All the answers await you in this article!

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro : Design

Dimensions (L x W x H)70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm
Weight146 g
TouchscreensFront screen: 1.46 inches
Rear screen: 2.5 inches
Operating temperature-20 to 45° C
Waterproofing20 meters

At first glance, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro looks very similar to its predecessor, the Osmo Action 4. With identical dimensions of 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm, it has gained just one gram, now weighing 146 g on the scales.

Apart from the “Pro” lettering next to the “5” on the front and the red border encircling the lens, the major aesthetic changes are concentrated on the front and rear screens. Both touchscreens are now in OLED format and larger: the front screen goes from 1.4 to 1.46 inches, while the rear screen increases from 2.25 to 2.5 inches. The latter occupies almost the entire rear surface of the case, and boasts a brilliant brightness of 1000 nits, ensuring excellent visibility even in bright sunlight.

For the rest, the layout remains faithful to that of the previous generation:

  • on one side, a large sliding hatch conceals the battery and memory card slot.
  • on the other side, a smaller flap houses the USB-C port and the customizable Quick Switch button, which also acts as an on/off button.
  • At the top is the recording button, accompanied by small perforations for sound recording.
  • underneath, the same efficient magnetic quick-release system, with its two side connectors.

The removable protective lens on the objective is also part of the package, offering excellent defense against damage and easily replaceable in the event of violent impact. In addition, the camera still comes with a protective frame that enhances its security, while offering mounting options, both horizontal and vertical, to suit any shot. On the downside, the frame adds a little bulk to the overall package.

Finally, the Osmo Action 5 Pro continues to impress with its resistance to extreme temperatures, from -20°C to 45°C. But that’s not all: its water resistance has also been reinforced. Already a leader in this field, this fifth generation can now dive to a depth of 20 meters (compared with 18 meters for the previous version) without the need for a diving case. To give you an idea, that’s twice as much as its rivals, such as the GoPro 13 and Insta360 Ace Pro. This extra margin is truly reassuring for lovers of aquatic adventures.

Same sensor, but new processor

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro retains the same sensor as its predecessor, with a size of 1/1.3 inch, an aperture of f/2.8 and a field of view (FOV) of 155°.

In terms of resolution, this new version makes a quantum leap with the ability to capture 40 MP photos. On the other hand, there’s little change in video resolution: it’s still 4K at 120 fps, available in 16:9 format and now also in 4:3 format. The camera also offers 2.7K resolution at up to 120 fps, and 1080p at up to 240 fps, for slow-motion enthusiasts. Although the video bit rate has dropped slightly (from 130 to 120 Mb/s), this does not seem to affect image quality.

The real innovation of the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro lies in its 4nm chip. This is the chip that powers most of the camera’s improvements, ensuring better responsiveness and, as we’ll see later, increased autonomy. As far as image quality is concerned, this chip offers superior processing with a dynamic range of 13.5 stops, resulting in superior photos and videos.

Even better image quality

Although the sensor is identical to that of its predecessor, the Osmo Action 5 Pro benefits from an extended dynamic range that significantly enhances image quality. With its 13.5 stops, this camera effectively handles variations in light intensity, enabling the capture of a wide range of tones and details, in both shadows and highlights.

In good lighting conditions, image quality is nothing short of remarkable. Dark areas are rendered with enhanced precision, and the image is softer and less contrasted than that of the Osmo Action 4, while offering an impressive wealth of detail. Even against the light, colors remain vivid and sharp, faces are clearly visible, and noise is virtually absent.

However, the situation becomes more complicated as the light diminishes. As is often the case with action cameras, the Osmo Action 5 Pro shows its limitations in low-light conditions. However, it is equipped with a new SuperNight mode, specially designed for these dark environments. This mode limits the frame rate to 30 fps in 4K and does not allow D-Log M flat profile, but it proves effective by increasing the ISO range up to 51200. While not a miracle solution, it’s a clear improvement on the Osmo Action 4, providing usable images to put in your montages or share with friends.

Modes and settings

To begin with, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers three shooting modes, allowing you to select the angle that suits you best:

  • Standard mode: equivalent to a 15 mm focal length
  • Wide mode: equivalent to a 12 mm focal length
  • Ultra-wide mode: equivalent to an 11 mm focal length

You can choose from four color profile options:

  • Normal 8-bit: for lighter files
  • Normal 10-bit: for images richer in nuances and color variations
  • HLG (10 bits): DJI’s HDR mode
  • D-Log M (10-bit): the flattest profile for customized calibration in post-production

Of course, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers automatic settings for those who prefer simplicity. However, for shooting enthusiasts, it also allows you to set various parameters manually: you can adjust exposure, white balance, ISO and shutter speed to suit your preferences.

4 types of stabilization

When it comes to stabilization, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro remains faithful to the four modes we know from the Osmo Action 4, which are as effective as ever:

  • RockSteady: the basic mode that guarantees a smooth image.
  • RockSteady+: ideal for dynamic activities such as cycling or motorcycling, this mode offers a higher level of stability, although it does crop the image a little more.
  • HorizonBalancing: stabilizes the horizon at an angle of up to 45°, perfect for tilted shots.
  • HorizonSteady: maximizes horizon stabilization, ensuring that it remains motionless even when the camera is rotated through 360°.

Finally, it is also possible to completely deactivate image stabilization and apply it in post-production using software such as GyroFlow.

Photo and video features

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers many of the same modes as its predecessor, the Osmo Action 4. Among them are :

  • Timelapse: to take time-lapse videos from a fixed point.
  • Hyperlapse: for accelerated videos in motion.
  • Pre-recording: this mode records continuously before you press the shutter release, with an adjustable delay from 5 seconds to 1 minute. Very useful if you don’t want to miss a thing, even if it does reduce battery life.
  • Loop recording: this mode allows you to record continuously, retaining only the last sequence, like a dashcam.

The new model also includes a number of new features:

  • SuperNight mode: already mentioned in the section on image quality, this mode is designed to optimize low-light shots.
  • Subject tracking: similar to a video stabilizer or DJI Pocket 3, this mode enables the Osmo Action 5 Pro to follow a moving person in its field of view, keeping the person in the center of the frame. The camera will automatically crop the image to a vertical format, with a maximum resolution of 2.7K. While this mode may seem accessory for those who prefer the classic use of an action cam, it can be an asset for those who also wish to vlog.
  • Built-in barometer: designed for mountain hiking, skydiving or diving, this sensor displays your altitude or depth on the screen, and possibly on your videos. When diving, you can even set the camera to activate automatically at a depth of one meter or more, and stop when you ascend. How convenient!

Finally, like the Osmo Action 4, the 5 Pro is compatible with the DJI Mic 2 wireless microphone. This new generation allows two transmitters to be connected via Bluetooth, providing clear 48 kHz sound pick-up.

Storage and connectivity

One of the most welcome new features concerns storage. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro now supports microSD memory cards of up to 1TB (compared with 512GB for the previous version). What’s more, it comes with 47 GB of built-in memory, ideal for those who forget their memory card at home or haven’t had time to empty it.

While 47GB may seem limited, it’s still enough to record around 80 minutes of video in 4K at 60 fps, or three hours in 1080p at 30 fps. This is a first for an action camera, and we hope it will inspire other manufacturers.

Finally, in terms of connectivity, it’s worth pointing out that the Osmo Action 5 Pro incorporates a USB-C 3.0 connection and Wi-Fi 6.0, enabling you to transfer files to your smartphone at speeds of up to 80 Mb/s. This is a clear improvement on the Action 4’s Wi-Fi 5.0, which was only 30 Mb/s, making use more pleasant.

Autonomy is one of the great advances of the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. While version 4 already boasted an impressive operating time of 160 minutes, the 5 Pro raises the bar even higher. Thanks to its more energy-efficient 4nm processor, and a battery whose capacity has been increased to 1950 mAh, this model can now offer up to 4 hours of video recording, representing a 50% increase on its predecessor.

Of course, this performance will depend largely on how you use your camera, and in particular on the modes and resolutions you select. Even so, the battery life provides a comfortable margin and makes it possible to cover a full session without any particular constraints.

Conclusion DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro: the action camera you need?

To sum up, although the changes in version 5 Pro do not represent a revolution for the range, they do reinforce the excellent impression left by its predecessor. Thanks to its exceptional image quality, further enhanced by the new 4nm chip offering improved dynamic range, its two fluid OLED touchscreens, its impressive battery life, its water resistance up to 20 meters, and its versatility thanks to its numerous functions, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro asserts itself as a leading action camera.

Although GoPro is perceived as the market leader in action cameras, DJI proves with this new model that it is a serious contender, ready to compete for the top spot. With a price/performance ratio that certainly surpasses that of its direct competitor, the Osmo Action 5 Pro ranks among the best cameras, if not the best in some respects. We really enjoyed our experience with it.

Should I buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro?

It all depends on your use. If you’re looking for a robust action camera that’s easy to handle, and you’re creating content in either vertical or horizontal format, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is sure to satisfy you. On the other hand, if you produce content in both formats, the GoPro’s 8:7 aspect ratio, which allows both formats to be obtained from a single video, may make it more suited to your needs.

What’s more, its superior resolution (5.3K ) is an asset for those who often crop their videos without wanting to sacrifice quality. In short, depending on your specific needs, some cameras will be more appropriate than others.

I already have the DJI Osmo Action 4, should I buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro?

If you already own the Osmo Action 4, there’s no need to replace it, unless you have a specific need for one of the new features, such as SuperNight mode, if you often shoot in the dark. While the improvements are interesting, they don’t justify an upgrade in most cases.
