DJI Fly: compatible iOS and Android devices

If you’re a DJI drone enthusiast, you’ll be aware that control of the firm’s devices is via a mobile app called DJI Fly. We’re often asked which smartphones and tablets are compatible with this application. In this article, we’ll explore the compatibility of the DJI Fly app with iOS and Android models, and how to optimize its operation. Here we go!

What is the DJI Fly application?

The DJI Fly app is a mobile application developed by DJI to enable users to pilot their drones with ease. It features an intuitive user interface that makes it easy to navigate and understand the drone’s operation. In addition to control, the application also includes functions such as :

  • Automated flight planning
  • Help with framing and composition suggestions
  • Edit photos and videos directly from within the application
  • Access to information such as weather, remaining range and no-fly zones

To use DJI Fly, it’s crucial to have a compatible smartphone with enough power to handle all these tasks in real time.

DJI Fly compatibility: which smartphone brands are concerned?

Although the DJI Fly app is optimized to work with a wide range of smartphones, it’s still important to check whether your phone is compatible before buying a drone or downloading the app. Here are the lists of officially compatible iOS and Android smartphones provided by the manufacturer:

iPhones

For iPhones, DJI Fly supports iOS 11.0 or later operating systems. Compatible iPhone models are :

  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max

Android smartphones

For Android smartphones, the DJI Fly app requires at least version 6. 0 (Marshmallow) of the operating system. Here is the official list of compatible models:

  • Honor 50 Pro
  • HUAWEI P30, P30 Pro, Mate30 Pro, P40 Pro, Mate40 Pro

DJI specifies that DJI Fly is “compatible on other Android devices”, and that “testing and development are continuing”. According to user feedback, there is a much wider range of Android devices on which the DJI Fly app runs smoothly, although they are not (yet) officially supported.

However, we recommend that you use one of the officially supported smartphones to avoid any problems with the DJI Fly application. Although other smartphone and tablet models can work with DJI Fly, only those listed on the DJI website have been thoroughly tested and guarantee that you won’t encounter any problems.

Factors affecting compatibility with DJI Fly

Although a smartphone may be on the list of devices compatible with DJI Fly, certain factors may still affect its operation. Here are just a few of the aspects to consider.

Smartphone performance

A key factor that can influence how a phone handles the DJI Fly application is its overall performance. Modern drones generate high-quality video data in real time, and therefore require significant processing power to ensure a smooth experience.

For this reason, older or lower-end models may find it difficult to keep up, leading to problems such as delays in live broadcasts, poor control responsiveness or overheating of the phone. In such cases, we recommend that youconsider buying a newer, higher-performancesmartphone.

Software updates

Software updates are essential to ensure that your smartphone remains compatible with DJI Fly. This includes updates to the operating system as well as to the application itself. So it’s crucial to check regularly whether updates are available for your phone to ensure an optimal experience.

Available storage

Storage on your smartphone can also play a role in DJI Fly compatibility. The images and videos captured by the drone can take up a considerable amount of space, quickly filling your phone’s internal memory. To remedy this problem, make sure you free up enough space before each flight, or consider using a microSD card to increase your device’s storage capacity.

Compatible, but not optimal: what to do?

In some situations, your smartphone may be compatible with the DJI Fly app, but you may still encounter problems that detract from your overall experience. For example:

  • A screen that is too small or not bright enough, making it difficult to view video feedback
  • Insufficient battery autonomy for several consecutive flights
  • Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection problems affecting control responsiveness

In such cases, it may be worth considering the purchase of a smartphone better suited to the specific needs of drone piloting. This could involve choosing a model with a larger, brighter screen, better battery life or enhanced connectivity capabilities.

To sum up, checking your smartphone’s compatibility with DJI Fly is a crucial step in making the most of your flying experience with your drone. By taking the above factors into account, you can identify the potential and limitations of your current device and decide whether a new smartphone is required to optimize your DJI Fly experience.
